New World Millennium Hong Kong Hotel Becomes First Luxury Hotel to Receive LEED O+M Gold Certification

Awarded for the Hotel’s Commitment to Sustainable Hospitality

New World Millennium Hong Kong Hotel has proudly become the first five-star luxury hotel in Hong Kong to receive the LEED Gold Certification for Operations and Maintenance (O+M) from U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the world’s most widely recognised green building rating system. It promotes sustainability through a framework for designing and maintaining healthy, efficient, and cost-effective green buildings. The LEED O+M certification specifically assesses how existing buildings are operated across key areas such as energy efficiency, water usage, indoor air quality waste management, and overall occupant experience.

The hotel now joins properties across over 180 countries worldwide in meeting LEED’s comprehensive leadership standards as it acknowledges the hotel’s continuous efforts and commitment to operating in ways which contribute to environmental and social benefits for the community. This certification marks a significant milestone for the hotel, positioning it as a leader in the hospitality industry working towards a more sustainable future through LEED’s framework.

Julian Wipper, the hotel’s General Manager, highlighted the importance of sustainability in hospitality: “This is a profound achievement for our hotel thanks to the collective effort of all our team members, the uncompromising support from the hotel’s ownership and the shared vision, that commitment to ESG and sustainable operation is essential in today’s world. With our proactive measures and best practices, we are joining hands to build a better future for everyone in the community.

A landmark right on the renowned Victoria harbourfront in vibrant Tsim Sha Tsui East with easy access to the city’s main transportation hubs and its’ abundance of award-winning dining options, the hotel has long been a favourite among travellers and locals alike. Mr Wipper added: “We trust that guests will continue to recognise the hotel not only as a preferred staying and dining destination but as a significant contributor toward the community. The hotel has a long history of environment-friendly initiatives, having been certified with ISO 14001 since 1999. Just last year, we were also a proud recipient of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) certification, further affirming that our operational practices and sustainability policies align with high global standards.

Mr. Andrew Lau, Director of ESG Advisory, Asia at Colliers, who supported the hotel’s
certification process, commented: “We’re delighted to see that New World Millennium Hong Kong Hotel has been recognised as a leader in sustainable hospitality by being the first luxury hotel in the city to achieve LEED’s O+M Gold certification. This accomplishment will certainly inspire fellow hoteliers to recognise the strategic importance of ESG performance. Incorporating such concepts into operations to meet rising stakeholder expectations and build a greener future is now a new priority for all. We at Colliers are proud to have supported the hotel in benchmarking, integrating sustainability policies, and enhancing associate involvements. The results were remarkable, with significant improvements in resource conservation and green practices which made a real difference in sustainability performance.”
