Over 300 Industry Representatives Attended the Award Ceremony to Recognise the Hotel’s Sustainability Commitments

New World Millennium Hong Kong Hotel has proudly become the first five-star luxury hotel in Hong Kong to receive the LEED Gold Certification for Operations and Maintenance (O+M) from U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). This milestone achievement was celebrated with an official award ceremony at the hotel’s Grand Ballroom on 16 April 2026, attended by guest-of-honour Professor Frederick Ma, Chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, together with over 300 hotel industry leaders, ESG representatives, and the hotel’s partners and supporters, all of whom engaged in exchanging ideas on sustainability initiatives and a greener future across sectors.
Julian Wipper, the hotel’s General Manager, highlighted the importance of sustainability in hospitality in his opening remarks: “For us, this achievement reflects our belief that true hospitality means caring not only for our guests and colleagues, but also for our community and our planet. At its’ core was the collective effort of all our team members, the uncompromising support and direction from our hotel’s ownership, and our shared vision that commitment to ESG and sustainable operations is essential in today’s world.”
Ms Jing Wang, Vice President of USGBC, North Asia delivered a speech on sustainability in hotel industry. She emphasized the challenges hotels face in achieving the high LEED standards: “Hotels operate 24/7, and sustainability efforts must never come at the expense of guest experience. Hotels are not just buildings; they are places where the world comes to you. Every guest experiences not only the service, but also the choices behind it—how energy is used, how resources are managed, and how comfort is delivered.” She went on to congratulate New World Millennium Hong Kong Hotel for leading the way in integrating hospitality and sustainability.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the world’s most widely recognised green building rating system. It promotes sustainability through a framework for designing and maintaining healthy, efficient, and cost-effective green buildings. The LEED O+M certification specifically assesses how existing buildings are operated across key areas such as energy efficiency, water usage, indoor air quality waste management, and overall occupant experience.
The hotel now joins properties across over 180 countries worldwide in meeting LEED’s comprehensive leadership standards as it acknowledges the hotel’s continuous efforts and commitment to operating in ways which contribute to environmental and social benefits for the community. This certification marks a significant milestone for the hotel, positioning it as a leader in the hospitality industry working towards a more sustainable future through LEED’s framework.
Mr. Andrew Lau, Director of ESG Advisory, Asia at Colliers, who supported the hotel’s
certification process, also delivered a speech: “The mindset for sustainability is so important, and this achievement is not the end of the journey, it’s actually the opposite. It marks the beginning of the sustainable journey for the hospitality industry. It’s also attracting all the sustainable travellers, corporate tourism, MICE events and also helping Hong Kong achieve carbon-neutrality with a bigger growth.”
An official plaque of the certification was presented to the hotel during the ceremony, witnessed by representatives across industries who all shared a passion for enhancing sustainability in the community.
A landmark right on the renowned Victoria harbourfront in vibrant Tsim Sha Tsui East with easy access to the city’s main transportation hubs and its’ abundance of award-winning dining options, the hotel has long been a favourite among travellers and locals alike. Mr Wipper added: “We trust that guests will continue to recognise the hotel not only as a preferred staying and dining destination but as a significant contributor toward the community. The hotel has a long history of environment-friendly initiatives, having been certified with ISO 14001 since 1999. Just last year, we were also a proud recipient of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) certification, further affirming that our operational practices and sustainability policies align with high global standards. Our vision—and the vision that unites us all—is to join hands to drive sustainability, to build a better future, and to continue inspiring one another.”
